Before you go
Chargrilled meat is close to a religion in Antioquia, and this collection gathers restaurants where the grill takes centre stage: from open-fire kitchens in Laureles such as Bárbaro, to roadside grills in Caldas or Girardota, by way of neighbourhood grills in Itagüí, Bello or Envigado and restaurants with a view on the Las Palmas road. Prices sit mostly at $$, with some at $$$.
On the menu you will see cuts with local names: punta de anca, known elsewhere as picanha, baby beef, churrasco and pork ribs, almost always served with potatoes, arepa, chorizo and salad. State clearly how you want it cooked when you order, medium, medium-well or well done, so it comes out the way you like. Portions are often generous, so sharing a large one between two is common.
A Sunday grill is a family outing, and roadside restaurants fill up at lunchtime; if you are a large group, book. The ones with live music or a view, such as San Carbón or El Zarzal, are better in the evening.
