Before you go
Bello is Medellín's northern neighbour and works as a city in its own right: it has its main square, its Rosario church, its shops and neighbourhoods, and many people who live there hardly need to go into Medellín to go out. The zone has two very different faces: urban Bello, around the centre and Niquía, and rural Bello up in the mountains, led by San Félix.
In the urban part you will find neighbourhood bars and cafés in the $ and $$ range, shopping centres such as Parque Fabricato and Puerta del Norte, and a small, curious museum: the Choza de Marco Fidel Suárez, devoted to the president who was born in the town. Up in San Félix, on the road to San Pedro de los Milagros, is one of the best-known paragliding spots in the valley, plus free viewpoints and country restaurants with a view. Quitasol, Bello's guardian hill, is a hike for early risers.
Metro line A runs to Niquía, with stops at Bello and Madera too, so the urban part is easy without a car. For San Félix, a taxi, your own car or a bus from Bello is the practical option; it is colder up there and mist rolls in during the afternoon, so bring a jacket and go early if you want a clear view.
