Before you go
Envigado is a separate municipality, although it borders El Poblado and many visitors take it for a continuation of Medellín. It is known for being calm, residential and proud of its identity: the main square, in front of the Santa Gertrudis church, is still the centre of social life, surrounded by restaurants, cafés and bars that are gentler on the wallet than El Poblado's.
The writer Fernando González lived here, and his house, Otraparte, is now a museum and cultural centre with a café in the garden that has become a must-stop. For food there is everything from contemporary Colombian cooking to grills, and at night the Magia Negra craft brewery or gastrobars such as Makabro are among the liveliest places. For nature, the El Salado ecotourism park, high up in the municipality, has trails and adventure activities, and Parque La Heliodora is a good family plan.
Envigado Metro station is down in the lower part; from there, the main square is a short bus or taxi ride. On weekend nights central Envigado gets busy, so book ahead if you have a particular restaurant in mind. For El Salado, go early, with comfortable shoes and a rain jacket.
