Before you go
Craft beer earned its place in Medellín through small breweries that make their own recipes and pour them in their own taprooms. You will find a bit of everything: light blondes for a warm afternoon, bitter IPAs, dark stouts and beers brewed with local ingredients such as coffee or fruit. Everything on this list is around the $$ range, pricier than a mass-market beer but with a different level of flavour.
The two hubs are Laureles, home to BBC and TorreAlta, and the south of the valley, with Magia Negra in Envigado and Apóstol in Sabaneta. They tend to be places for talking rather than partying, with music at a volume that lets you hear each other. They work very well for a weeknight with friends or for starting the evening before moving on.
If you are not sure what to order, ask whether they have a tasting flight or will let you sample before choosing; small breweries are usually happy to explain. Keep in mind that many craft beers are stronger than commercial ones, and that getting home by taxi or ride-hailing car beats driving.
